From Ubuntu 13.04 will introduce new search engines to the Unity Dash (Scopes), on a single OS that will introduce many features scattered in 100 different sites.
For those who follow the development of Ubuntu for at least two years will have noticed two of novelties like the Dash of Unity: The Lens and Scopes
For those who do not know yet the difference between the two types of extensions, enough to know that both perform functions additional search for the Dash, but the Lens affording such results on a sub-menu of specific Dash, while the Scopes work "intelligently ", activating itself automatically according to the type of word entered in the search bar of Dash.
In this context, many Lens and Scopes have been created by the development team at Canonical and the community, able to answer some of the research needs of the user.
The lens, however, have shown several limitations: they are slow, negative impact on the system and are difficult to update for compatibility with new versions of Unity.
Instead Scopes have shown greater flexibility, showing fast, responsive and precise
Collected all the feedback and impressions users, Canonical has decided to invest more on Scopes.
The work carried out is one of those impressive: over 100 Scopes, interfaced well with the respective sites.
The search bar in Ubuntu Dash could become truly "universal" will be able to get targeted results based on the phrase or words you typed in the bar.
Currently it is confirmed the presence of very famous Scopes for sites such as:
Soundcloud, Grooveshark, Radios, Ubuntu One Music, Clear Dark Sky, Google News, Weather Underground, OpenWeatherMap, Wikipedia, Europeana; Recipe Puppy, Gourmet, Stock Yahoo, IMDb, Gallica, Wordnik, eBay, Etsy, Amazon;
Plus many other sites.
In addition to interfacing with the sites, some Scopes task will be to act as real "utility" of the system:
Files, Applications, Calculator, Chromium / Chrome bookmarks, Firefox bookmarks, VirtualBox Machines, Zeitgeist Web History, Google Drive, is.gd
The bar will make calculations, conversions and search files with ease, or allow you to view files stored in the cloud, to look in the main browser bookmarks, view the new programs added .....
This little revolution is one of those "silent", but able to make a lot of noise once come to light.
Some practical examples of the potential of the project:
I search on a film just released on DVD / Blu-ray, and Scopes IMDb immediately shows me the card of the film, with votes, ratings and plot, while Amazon responds showing me the link where to buy the support, I just listened to a song I like the radio or on TV: I type the words in the text and immediately SoundCloud, Grooveshark Radios and respond by showing the most relevant results, I can listen to them directly in the Dash or buy them online at Amazon;
I use the word "buy" followed by "TV 40 inch" bar will appear immediately in the search results on eBay or Amazon on the best deals for the selected product, I have to plan a trip to Paris: I type "trip on February 12 in Paris" and come out in sequence: weather, train and plane timetables plus the best deals on last-minute travel sites, I have to cook a special recipe for a romantic date: I type "aphrodisiac recipe" in the bar and get the best advice sites specialized, as well as links to the shops in the city, I'm sick, and I have a clear awareness of the symptoms: I type everything in the bar and get the most relevant results on Wikipedia and sites that specialize in medical advice;
Just to name a few.
A system which obviously requires, in most cases, a browser for displaying the results selected and opened (except for utilities, which will show the results already in the bar) but which in fact replaces the classic search engine "static "(Google, Bing) with a" multi-search "smart as close to the real needs of users.
Canonical ensures that the Scopes are never active "all together", but through a mechanism "Toogle ON / OFF" will be activated only on the basis of the search words, plus you will have complete freedom on which to install, activate or leave off.
Other doubts have emerged in the field of privacy: what will your searches and queries entered in the toolbar?
Canonical provides full control over the shared data (at least on the desktop), and more, thanks to the instrument Privacy integrated from Ubuntu 12.04, you can delete any search histories of a single button.
The potential does not stop there: entries close to Canonical say the Scopes will be carried easily in the search bar of Ubuntu Phone OS, where interactions "Apps / Scopes" promise to beat the competition in the smartphone arena.
Example: install the app on your smartphone eBay? Will also be installed on the Scopes integrated into the search bar the Dash "mobile" and the results thereof shall be managed by the JPA associated.
Other features highly anticipated and already in the works: Synchronization Scopes Ubuntu with all devices (desktop and mobile) and the Scopes "voice", to compete on equal terms with Siri Now Apple and Google Android.
