Research by VeriSign rattles off numbers on the network domains. Boring to read, but symptomatic of the continuing expansion of the network.

Internet domains: the network continues to grow

More than six million new domains created in the fourth quarter of 2012. In total 252 million top-level domains registered across the planet at the end of 2012. An increase of 2.5% compared to the third quarter of 2012, the eighth consecutive quarter of growth at rates of over 2%. On an annual basis, the increase was 11, 8%, or 26.6 million new domains.

The top-level domains are no longer registered. Com and. Net. Together they represent 121.1 million of domain names. The increase in 2012 over the previous year, is equal to 6.4%. At the beginning of 2013, the. Com domains are 106.2 million, 14.9 million quelli.net.

The new domain registrations. Com and. Net during the fourth quarter of 2012 amounted to € 8 million. In the fourth quarter of 2011, new car registrations totaled 7.9 million. The growth rate in 2012 is 72.9%, in the third quarter was 72.5%.

During the fourth quarter of 2012, the average daily DNS queries, including the top-level domains managed by VeriSign, is 77 billion, with a peak of 123 billion. The increase compared to the previous quarter is 16%, 20.4% for the peak. Compared to 2011 the daily average increased by 21.5%, the peak of 5.3%.
