NVIDIA releases drivers 319.12 Beta for Linux: added initial support to Optimus

A few months ago we told you about rumors that NVIDIA was working on official support for Optimus, proprietary technology of the American home that allows you to manage the integrated Intel and NVIDIA to the outside for better energy savings, on its official drivers for Linux.

In fact, to date the Penguin the only way to use this technology was to use an unofficial tool, Bumblebee, who was in charge to manage the switch between the two graphics cards based on the commands given to him by the user, in a manner then, however, much less efficient than Windows, where it is handled automatically.

But now you no longer need: in fact, NVIDIA has released new drivers 319.12, currently in Beta, which add its official support to the Optimus technology on Linux.

In fact, through the NVIDIA X Server Settings, the configuration module of the official driver, it will be possible to access a new tab which will allow us to set the rules for the implementation of the various software installed on your system, choosing whether to start with the card with integrated or dedicated.

It is to admit that the process of development to finally get this functionality has been rather difficult: in fact NVIDIA initially had tried to remedy the problem by proposing a series of patches to the Linux kernel in order to allow the management of the two video cards, which, however, due to the proprietary license who had been rejected by the Linux Foundation.

At that point all seemed lost, until he was released on RandR 1.4 new system developed by Red Hat, which allows the management of advanced video sources, just what NVIDIA needed. In doing so, the inclusion of support Optimus was just a simple consequence.

At the moment, however, it is only a partial functionality, as it has yet to be activated manually by the user and not automatically as it does on Windows, despite what you may be already satisfied because it allows better management than one with Bumblebee. In the next release, however, will add support for the automation of Optimus.

It is also necessary to replace the xorg. Conf default with a specific, present in the README file of the driver.

NVIDIA 319.12 also brings a number of significant changes to the patches and drivers, including some fixes for UEFI support, enhancements for debugging OpenGL, a new form of management of the GPU decoding included in the configuration panel and support for your video card You BOOST GTX 650.

The new drivers can be downloaded from this page to the 32-bit and 64-bit for this, for all users from Ubuntu 11.10 onwards (including the 4.13 currently in Beta) is available xorg-edgers ppa installed from these commands from the terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: xorg-edgers/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-319 nvidia-settings-319

Optimus to utilize the functionality you need to have installed on your system the X server X.org 1.13 and higher. In addition, you must install a modern version of the Linux kernel, certainly more than is contained in Ubuntu 12.04 (3.2) 12.10 (3.4). It is not clear if the latest stable series, the 3.8 (this among other things in Ubuntu 13.04), it is sufficient, or whether it is necessary to opt for the latest release in development, 3.9.
