Disable the geolocation in Firefox 3.5

Obsessed with privacy? You do not want a website to know in which city are you in? Turn off the geo-location of Firefox 3.5 by preventing websites to find there.

Disable the geolocation in Firefox 3.5

Along with Firefox 3.5 has arrived also (sometimes) handy feature that allows a website to know the exact location of the visitor.

But what is it?

Any site can implement the above function of geo-location, but at the moment there is only a demo from Mozilla to this address. It is only compatible with Firefox 3.5 (and later, of course), visiting with earlier versions is useless ...

When you visit a site that requires the geographical location, shows a gray bar at the top of the page informing you of the fact.

At right are two buttons to allow, deny and remember the action taken.

Once you click on Notify position , the map below, we will inform the city and the street where we are.

To calculate the geographical position, a request is made to Google Location Services forwarding the IP address of the machine with the wireless connection points. In addition, the client is assigned a random identifier that expires after 2 weeks.

The position can be calculated more or less precise: in some areas may have a position within a few meters, while in others it may be less accurate.

Disabling the functionality

If you care so much for your privacy, you can disable the feature with no problems, only a few clicks.

We type about: config in the address bar and confirm the opening of the configuration panel. In the field Filter , we type geo and look for results in the voice geo.enabled and clicchiamoci on it.

To highlight the change, the character of the parameter will become bold.

Restart the browser for changes to take effect.
