A new graphical user interface is attractive and usable, ready to conquer the users disappointed by Unity and GNOME 3.
We have tried every type of desktop environment for GNU / Linux and on time this proved to be a disappointment?
We are tired of Unity, GNOME 3, which provide interfaces for the tablet / netbook but completely unusable on desktops and laptops?
Then roll up our sleeves with this article we will create almost from scratch a new desktop environment for our existing building on the tools and integrating them with the right program.
For this article we use Ubuntu 11.10, but you can also try these changes on previous versions, the only prerequisites are:
The presence of pre-installed or installed from the repositories Unity2D Driver 3D up and running
A new interface
Install Ubuntu 11.10 and we start the default desktop environment, Unity
Open a terminal by clicking on the corresponding icon or trying the starter in the shell (top left click on the symbol of Ubuntu)
We type sudo apt-get install cairo-dock
We confirm the installation by clicking on the button S on the keyboard followed by Enter
After installation, we must not do is end the current session to immediately try the new desktop environment: to do so can I use the shortcut CTRL + ALT + DEL
We will return to the login screen of the system
Click on the symbol and select a gear as a graphical environment Cairo-Dock (with GNOME and effects)
Enter the password to start the new session.
The Unity system will turn off and load the components of the dock, at this stage the system may seem to hang for several minutes.
A warning message will ask whether to start the hardware acceleration for the dock
Click the radio button choice and click on Remember this is .
The new inferfaccia will be shown in all its glory
A bar with applets and shortcuts plus a switch virtual desktops, all customized to the tastes and needs.
To complete the environment will add a static toolbar at the top with the information system and necessary for the proper initiation of globalmenu
To introduce this bar let the voice applications boot , clicking in the menu on the dock in this Ubuntu
Insert a new entry in autostart clicking on Add
We use as / usr/bin/unity-2d-panel and we name pleasure
We leave the program and restart your session to effect the changes.
