When we sell a used computer, or even the only one hard disk, we must always worry that someone can recover our old stored documents we worked.

Even if we formatted the hard drive and reinstall the operating system there is always the possibility, using techniques and schemes to recover some data.

If we limit ourselves to simply delete them, even when we leave a job and we moved to a different computer, the recovery is even easier. There are many free programs that do this, and many others pay more sophisticated.

There are programs like Disk Wipe, free software is also available in portable version, which allows you to delete permanently (and easily made up) data on a hard drive, or individual files and folders.

If you want to learn more about the final deletion of files and the Gutmann method, one of the techniques used, see this page.

We had dealt with secure erase and permanent data in this article focuses on Hardwipe program, now known Disk Wipe.

The program is free to all and distributed in portable version, is responsible to remove hard disk full, so no individual files and folders as Hardwipe, just select your hard drive and press Disk Wipe to start the process.

As a bootable program from Windows, the disk to be deleted must be connected as secondary hard drive, or external drive via USB port.

Unless your particular needs, choose NTFS as File System.

Now you must specify the type of overwriting. Each method has its own characteristics and requires more or less time to complete depending on the number of steps that must be done.

Confirm writing Erase all.

Further, and last confirmation.

And finally you start formatting, I chose the method Russian GOST and took about 32 minutes to do the two steps required on a 40 GB disk mounted on a computer rather old.

The larger the disk, perhaps even increasing steps of overwriting, the longer analyte should be utilized.

After completing the Wipe Disk I wanted to check with Recuva, what could be recovered from the hard drive, I see that it was filled the space with huge 2GB file filled with random characters making unreadable all that was there before.
