Add a touch of color to folders and files on your PC!

A client, who worked on numerous projects of different nature between them, asked me a way to color the name of these files or folders with, so as to distinguish them and search them faster.

I found a couple of programs that allow me to do this: Rainbow Folders and FreeCommander.

Rainbow Folders

Rainbow Folders require installation, is compatible with all versions of Windows and can be downloaded from this address. Its use is free, but is distributed under license Postcardware: the author asks you if you liked the program and continue using it, to send him a real greeting card for his collection.

During the installation of Rainbow Folders selected Italian.

Enabled the Council to leave ' Install System shell extension in order to have the program available directly from the context menu right click on My Computer.

In view of some Windows system folders can not be written.

Rainbow Folders allows you to change the color and style of the classic icons of folders reusing Windows 9x, or those of XP and Vista. Slide your cursor of Darkness and Saturation we can choose custom colors and then just press the button Color to apply it to the folder you choose. With the button bleach remove the changes made.

The changes are stored in a file and a desktop.ini file whose name starts with RF followed by a series of numbers and that has the extension. Ico.

Do not delete or modify these two files never lose the set changes.

This is the aspect of the Windows folder after making some changes.

Try to imagine the effect you would get in your My Documents folder by assigning a different color for each customer or for each type of activity for which you have created a new subfolder.

Once you have applied all the changes required, you can also uninstall the program, the two files contain all the set changes.

Coloring the files

To give a touch of color to your files, divided by extension, however, we think FreeCommader, an alternative program, and much more feature-rich than normal Windows Explorer. The software can be downloaded from this address is to be installed in a portable version.

Going to the menu Extras - Configuration then we can choose Show - Colors and add new extensions with its colors to be assigned to each category of files.

By clicking on the button indicated by the number 1 opens a small box where you can enter the file extension you want to color: I recommend to precede the extension point.

The number 2 button opens the box instead of choosing colors to be assigned.

What you see below is a mix of the effect of RainbowFolders FreeCommander and colors.

Files are colored, however, displayed only if FreeCommander used in other programs or other file managers are not visible.
