I can turn an Eee PC with Ubuntu in a Wi-Fi Router?

The netbook can be configured to act as a gateway, allowing access via HSDPA.

I can turn an Eee PC with Ubuntu in a Wi-Fi Router?

Question :

Hello!

I recently bought a Vodafone branded Huawei's HSDPA modem and I was going to connect it to my Eee PC 7 "(which is Ubuntu 8.04), then sharing the connection via Wi-Fi and Ethernet to navigate .. also my laptop with Vista and XP ... you can drive with?

The idea that I had was this:

1. Install, configure the connection to the Internet via the modem hsdpa

2. Set the sharing of the Internet on your Wi-Fi and Ethernet on that

3. install a DHCP server that automatically assigns IP addresses to clients

4. Set the automatic connection and disconnection at the request of the client

5. set up a WPA for Wi-Fi network

At the theoretical level I am convinced we can do .. but I have not the faintest idea what to serve me .. and how do I configure the system .. can you help me?

If any of you know just enlighten me on one of the points I listed I would be really grateful ..

Hello and thank you.

Answer :

Hello.

I would say that it is feasible, from all points of view.

Create the connection to the Internet with the GPRS modem, if you're lucky you may succeed with the Network Manager (but you'd be one of the lucky ones), otherwise you have to try the wiki ...

Or with a guide like this ... http://www.paolomainardi.com/2007/09/12 ... on-ubuntu /

Setting up Wi-Fi ...

... However keep in mind that there are several tools including graphs (network managers, kwifimanager, wicd, wlassistant, etc ...) to configure the Wi-Fi.

For the WPA (if not present in the instrument you decide to use) ... http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/Hardware/Disp ... Supplicant

Creating a DHCP server with Ubuntu ...

To set as the gateway ....

http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/InternetRete/ ... 3a32149e85

... skip the configuration of network cards, already do with DHCP, go immediately to IP forwarding and masquerading where you have to replace-o eth1 (understood as the network adapter connected to the ADSL modem)-o ppp0 (the UMTS modem connection )

To create a system to enable / disable the connection from the client, you should use a secure remote terminal (SSH) ... http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/InternetRete/ ... you / openssh

Also you need to properly configure Netfilter (firewall built into the Linux kernel) through the iptables command (my favorite solution) or one of several graphical interfaces available, the choice is yours.

I hope it took me a while 'everything.
