In the UK the music is free

Virgin Media users can sign a contract that allow you to download music for free from the catalog of Universal Music Group, with no limits and no DRM. But, meanwhile, is spoken of disconnections for those who turn to P2P. It is the beginning of a revolution?

In the UK the music is free

It could be a change in policy dell'inzio content distribution? Although both of the conditional obligation, the agreement signed between the entertainment giant Universal Music Group and Virgin Media, a provider of Internet connectivity across the Channel, is undoubtedly the first step in what could become a small revolution.

Unlimited MP3

According to the statement, the agreement will allow all ISP customers to stream and even download music without any restrictions from the large catalog Universal.

It will not be the usual strict DRM-protected files may expect that the more cautious, but rather to traditional MP3 free of any protection and without any deadline.

The subscription price has not yet been announced, but rumors tell of a figure all in all quite small: 10-15 pounds (12-18 euros) per month, which, in all probability, will be added the cost of the Internet itself.

The full rate will also be supported by some smaller profiles, dedicated to the surge less frequent: the same MP3 format, but probably an upper limit to the number of songs downloadable each month.

Disconnections for non-compliance

As part of the agreement, however, Virgin Media has agreed to introduce the system of disconnections to all those who will be plucked to exchange copyright-protected content without proper justification.

It will not be permanently terminate the connection (recent practice branded as "unconstitutional" in neighboring France), but rather to deprive users of the service for a period of time ranging "from a few minutes to a few hours," according to a regulation of which still were not disclosed details.

Virgin Media has assured that the surveys will be carried out without analyzing the data in transit. How this is possible from the technical point of view is yet to understand: the most convincing hypothesis is that the provider can see relying on third-party companies that provide such services. One difference, of course, considered important at least from the perspective of marketing.

Will it work?

The service will be officially launched at the end of this year. As mentioned, will be present and the whole vast catalog Universal Music Group, which counts among its ranks particularly popular performers, such as Pussycat Dolls, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West and other big international rankings.

On the other hand, UMG is considered the largest record label in the world with a market share of over 25% of the total.

Nevertheless, many other artists are tied to competing labels: the subscribers subscription then have to do without the songs from Warner Music Group (Tori Amos, Bee Gees, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Phil Collins, just to name a few ), EMI (Beatles, Roxette, Depeche Mode) and Sony Music Entertainment (Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez) just to mention the most important.

It is clear that there are so many illustrious absent: although it is conceivable that, at a later time, Virgin Media may also make agreements with competitors, it is a possibility that will be explored at a later time.

It remains to be seen if the offer is legal and free, after all, fairly inexpensive duo can convince users to abandon the boundless Circut peer-to-peer illegal.

The possibility is very remote indeed: the proposal from Virgin-Universal is in fact very little compared to the wealth of the "catalog" present on BitTorrent and eMule, not to mention all the video material (movies and TV series) which is not ; minimally covered.

If so it appears unlikely that the novelty will somehow undermine the popularity of peer-to-peer, is absolutely no doubt that this is a first, important step towards the establishment of a legal distribution system real winner.
