Way back in 1994, was the pioneer in offering free web space, and, from a certain point of view, the very first to make a sort of aggregator of content produced by users, proposing a model that would have accrued, until many years later , in the trend we now know as "Web 2.0".
The 90's are long gone, however, GeoCities, and does not seem to be more profitable. With an informative (who knows so much a farewell) appeared at the end of the week just ended, Yahoo! has anticipated the permanent discontinuation.
What is true however gradually: when new entries are only inhibited, while the closure of all accounts existing true only at a later date, probably after the summer.
Yahoo! definitely did not believe that things would end this way when acqusì GeoCities in 1999 to the tune of 3.57 billion dollars ..
Although Yahoo! will ensure that there is no hurry to migrate, it could certainly be a good idea to start saving all your data and look around for alternatives.
